Doughnut Recipe or Drop Doughnuts are part of learning How to Make Bread

The following is a good basic doughnut recipe (or donut recipe; both pronounced the same). Many of us get hungry for a donut from time to time. We will often run to a bakery or commercial shop to buy them not realizing how quick and easy homemade doughnuts are to make; plus they are so delicious. Another important factor is that homemade donuts are so cheap to make.

In some countries donut recipes are simply referred to as fried dough recipes. Although doughnuts can be baked in the oven, to me a donut must be fried. Without the oil in the frying process, the taste and texture is different which takes away from the doughnut characteristics.

I say this doughnut recipe is basic because it is delicious as a simple drop doughnut or it can be changed in simple ways to make a variety of different donuts.

DROP DOUGHNUTS

  • 2 Cups flour

  • ¼ Cup sugar

  • 3 Teaspoons baking powder

  • ½ Teaspoon salt

  • 1 Teaspoon nutmeg

  • ¼ Cup cooking oil

  • ¾ Cup milk

  • 1 Egg

  • Oil for frying

Powdered sugar or mix granulated sugar with cinnamon in a bag to coat the donuts.

Sift together the flour, sugar, baking powder, salt and nutmeg.

Mix in the oil, milk and egg until well blended.

Drop by teaspoonfuls into hot oil (375F degrees)

Cook until brown; drain on paper towels and drop into the bag of sugar. Remove from bag to a platter.

My favorite doughnut recipe is made from this basic one. I left out the nutmeg and added 1 teaspoon apple pie spice to the dry ingredients. I mixed the egg, ¼ cup of milk and oil together and added to the dry ingredients. Then I opened a can of apple pie filling and cut in small pieces 1 cup of the apples from this can. After adding the pie filling to the dry ingredients, I stirred in more milk to make a soft dough.

Turn the dough onto a floured board and knead until rolling consistency. Roll to ¾ inch thick. Cut with a donut cutter or use a glass and shape a hole in the center with your fingers. Drop in hot oil and fry until brown on both sides. Drain on paper towels. Drop in bag of powdered sugar and shake to cover. Remove to tray. THESE ARE DELICIOUS!
