Beef Short Ribs Recipes

The best beef short ribs recipes are made with ones which are thick. Lately, I have noticed short ribs at Sam’s which are very thinly sliced which I learned are referred to as the “English” cut. I had never seen this cut before. It looks like most of them are all fat and some bone. This is not all I have noticed lately. I cannot believe how expensive they are. I know beef has really gone up in price but short ribs use to be one of the cheapest parts of the beef you could buy.

Years ago, when all my kids were at home I would make all kinds of beef short ribs recipes. Until recently, I only knew of one cut of short ribs. The bone in each was about 2 inches long which I now find them to be called “flanken”. Each piece was laden with marbled fat and thick beef. The flavor was fantastic, no matter how you cooked them. I would always buy this part of the beef not only for the flavor and versatility but because they were so cheap.

I made great beef short ribs recipes usually by first cooking the ribs until tender. You can add potatoes, carrots and all kinds of vegetables with them. My kid’s favorites usually included cooking homemade noodles or dumplings in the broth after cooking the meat. Rice and grits also makes a nice accompaniment for this beef. With the wonderful flavor of this marbled beef, I am sure you can imagine the great flavor it adds to soups and stews.

Short ribs can be cooked on the stove top, in the oven or in a slow cooker. By the way, the slow cooker is great for barbequing them. When this barbeque meat is tender and falling off the bones it is time to make you a delicious sandwich. Do not rule this cut out for backyard grilling. With flavorful marinades, short ribs can be the hit of your outdoor barbeque.

NOTE: Short ribs are tougher than a lot of other beef. I like them cooked longer until they are very tender.

GRILLED SHORT RIBS

Grilled Short RibsGrilled Short Ribs
  • 6 Pounds beef short ribs
  • ¾ Cup Worcestershire sauce
  • Juice from 1 small lime
  • 1 Teaspoon Tabasco sauce
  • 2 Cloves minced garlic
  • ¼ Teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ Cup sherry

Dry ribs on paper towels.
Combine in small bowl combine Worcestershire and next 5 ingredients.
Mix well and let stand 15 minutes to combine flavors.
Place short ribs in a shallow platter; spread sauce over meat.
Cover meat and let stand for 1 to 2 hours.
Oil grill rack lightly; place rack about 6 inches from heat source.
When grill is hot remove ribs from sauce and place of grill rack.
Pour marinade sauce into a cup to use as marinade while cooking.
Cook beef to desired doneness brushing frequently with sauce.
Let stand about 10 minutes before serving; serves 6.


SHORT RIBS AND BARBEQUE SAUCE

Short Ribs and Barbeque SauceShort Ribs and Barbeque Sauce

Prepare beef short ribs recipes like Fort Wilderness Campground (Suppose to be their recipe; I cannot confirm)

  • 4 to 5 Pounds beef short ribs
  • Salt/ pepper to taste

Barbeque Sauce

  • ½ Cup tomato sauce
  • ½ Cup cider vinegar
  • ¼ Cup dry sherry
  • ½ Teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 Teaspoon dry mustard
  • 1 Teaspoon BBQ spice
  • 1 Clove garlic (Chop fine)
  • 1 Cup catsup
  • 1 Tablespoon soy sauce
  • ¼ Cup vegetable oil
  • 1 Teaspoon liquid smoke
  • 1 Teaspoon salt
  • ½ Teaspoon white pepper
  • ¼ Cup sugar
  • 1 ½ Teaspoons cornstarch
  • 3 Tablespoons water

Preheat oven to 350F degrees.
FOR RIBS season with salt and pepper; bake about 30 minutes.
NOTE: Ribs should be nicely browned.
Pour off any fat in pan; set aside for other seasoning or discard.
REDUCE OVEN TEMPERATURE to 325F degrees.
FOR SAUCE combine tomato sauce and next 13 ingredients in saucepan.
Dissolve the cornstarch in the water.
Bring mixture in saucepan to a boil; stir in cornstarch mixture.
Cook and stir until mixture thickens; cook for 2 minutes.
Dip ribs into the barbeque sauce; place in baking pan.
Bake for 1 hour or until ribs are tender; serves 4.


EASY BARBEQUE BEEF SHORT RIBS

Make easy beef short ribs recipes by using commercially made BBQ sauce.
Preheat oven to 325F degrees.
Place ribs in a shallow pan with small amount of water.
Cover pan with foil; bake for 2 hours.
Uncover meat and drain off liquid; brush generously with the bottled BBQ sauce.
Cover and return to the oven; bake another 1 hour. (Brush occasionally with the sauce.)
NOTE: Watch so ribs do not dry out.


BEEF SHORT RIBS RECIPE

You can make beef short ribs recipes on the stove top.

  • 6 Pounds beef short ribs
  • 1Tablespoon salt
  • 1 Tablespoon meat seasoning
  • 8 Peppercorns
  • 2 Sliced onions
  • 1 Diced carrot
  • ½ Cup parsley
  • Horseradish

Place the ribs in a large pot on the stove top.
Cover ribs with cold water; bring to a boil over high heat.
LOWER THE HEAT and cook 2 hours; add vegetables and seasonings.
Cook 2 more hours; serve horseradish.
Serves 6.


SWEET SOUR BEEF SHORT RIBS

Cooking beef short ribs recipes with a sweet and sour sauce.
For Ribs

  • 4 Pounds beef short ribs
  • 3 Tablespoons fat
  • 1/3 Cup flour

Sauce

  • 1 ½ Cups sliced green onions
  • 1 ½ Cloves garlic (Slice)
  • 1/8 Teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 Cups hot water
  • 1 Bay leaf
  • ½ Cup vinegar
  • 4 Tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 Cup catsup
  • ½ Teaspoon salt
  • 2 Tablespoons flour
  • 2 Tablespoons water
  • Hot cooked rice

FOR RIBS dredge each in flour; set aside.
Heat fast in a large skillet; place ribs in skillet and brown on all sides.
Place ribs in large Dutch oven or pot.
Add onion, garlic and black pepper to the skillet; cook until tender.
Add the onion mixture to the short ribs.
Combine hot water and next 5 ingredients; pour over the ribs.
Cover pot tightly; cook about 2 ½ to 3 hours until tender.
Remove ribs to a serving platter and keep warm.
Spoon off any fat from pot; mix together the flour and water.
Stir into the pan broth stirring until thickened; serve with hot rice.
Serves 4 to 6.


SLOW COOKER SHORT RIBS

Great beef short ribs recipes can be made in a slow cooker.

  • 4 Pounds beef short ribs
  • 2/3 Cup flour
  • 2 Teaspoons salt
  • ½ Teaspoon black pepper
  • 6 Tablespoons butter
  • 1 Large chopped onion
  • 1 ½ Cups beef broth
  • ¾ Cup cider vinegar
  • ¾ Cup brown sugar
  • ½ Cup chili sauce
  • 1/3 Cup ketchup
  • 1/3 Cup Worcestershire sauce
  • 5 Cloves minced garlic
  • 1 ½ Teaspoons chili powder

Rinse ribs with cold fresh water; pat dry.
In a large zip lock plastic bag mix flour, salt and pepper.
Place ribs in bag and shake to coat with flour mixture.
Heat butter in a large skillet; place ribs in skillet and brown.
Transfer ribs to slow cooker; add remaining ingredients to the skillet.
Cook and stir until mixture comes to a boil; pour over the ribs.
Cover and cook on low for 9 to 10 hours until meat is tender.
Serves 12.


SAUERKRAUT AND SHORT RIBS

Many beef short ribs recipes are good with sauerkraut.

  • 2 Pounds beef short ribs
  • ½ Cup raisins
  • 1/3 Cup brown sugar
  • 1 Cup apple juice
  • 1 Quart sauerkraut
  • 2 medium tart apples (Cored and sliced)

Preheat oven to 325F degrees.
Arrange beef ribs in a Dutch oven.
Combine and mix remaining ingredients; pour over the ribs.
Cover and bake about 2 ½ hours until ribs are tender.


SHORT RIBS WITH PLUM SAUCE

  • 6 Pounds beef short ribs
  • ¾ Cup soy sauce
  • ¾ Cup plum jam
  • ¾ Cup honey
  • 3 Cloves minced garlic

Preheat oven to 350F degrees.
Place ribs on a rack in shallow roasting pan.
Cover and bake 1 hour until ribs are tender.
Combine soy sauce, jam, honey and garlic.
Brush plum sauce over ribs; return to oven for 30 minutes.
NOTE: Brush ribs with plum sauce every 3 more times during baking.
Serves 12 to 14.


JACK DANIELS BEEF SHORT RIBS

Jack Daniels makes delicious beef short ribs recipes and many other recipes.

  • 3 Cloves minced garlic
  • 1 Tablespoon black pepper
  • 1 Tablespoon salt
  • 1 Tablespoon brown sugar
  • ½ Cup finely chopped onion
  • ½ Cup ketchup
  • 1/3 Cup Jack Daniels
  • 5 Pounds beef short ribs

Combine and mix the garlic and next 6 ingredients.
Place ribs in a large plastic zip lock bag.
Pour Jack Daniels mixture over the ribs.
Seal bag tightly and refrigerate overnight.
PREHEAT OVEN TO 350F degrees.
Place ribs in a casserole baking dish.
Pour Jack Daniels marinade over the ribs.
Bake uncovered until meat is tender (1 to 1 ½ hours).
Serves 12.


HEARTY BEEF SHORT RIBS

Beef short ribs recipes with potatoes make great meals.

  • 4 Pounds beef short ribs
  • 1 Can (15 Ounces) condensed beef broth
  • 8 Potatoes (Peel and quarter)

Gravy

  • 3 Tablespoons softened butter
  • 1/3 Cup flour
  • 2 Cloves finely chopped garlic
  • ¼ Cup red wine
  • 1 Teaspoon salt
  • Fresh ground black pepper to taste.

Preheat oven to 550F degrees.
Place ribs in a shallow baking pan (NOT GLASS).
Bake for 15 minutes to brown; drain off excess fat.
LOWER OVEN TEMPERATURE to 325F degrees.
Add beef broth to the ribs; cover and bake 1 ½ hours until tender.
Add potatoes; bake 30 minutes longer.
FOR GRAVY melt butter in a skillet; stir in flour until browned.
Stir in 1 ½ cups of the pan juices and the garlic.
NOTE: If you do not have enough pan juices add beef broth to measure 1 ½ cups.
Stir and cook until thickened; add the sherry and seasonings.
Pour gravy over ribs and potatoes; return to oven 15 minutes.
Serves 8.


WESTERN BEEF SHORT RIBS

Cook beef short ribs recipes with dried beans.

  • 4 Medium onions (Peel and quarter)
  • 2 Teaspoons salt
  • ¼ Teaspoon black pepper
  • ½ Teaspoon dried sage
  • 1 Quart water
  • 1 Cup dried lima beans
  • 1 Tablespoon flour
  • 1 Teaspoon dry mustard
  • 3 Tablespoons bacon fat
  • 2 Pounds beef short ribs

Combine the onions and next 4 ingredients in a large Dutch oven.
Cover and bring to a boil; REDUCE TEMPERATURE and simmer 5 minutes.
Bring to a boil again and slowly add lima beans; cook uncovered 2 minutes.
Set off heat, cover and let set for 1 hour.
Mix flour and dry mustard; coat ribs with mixture.
Heat bacon fat in a large skillet over medium heat;
Brown ribs on all sides; add to the beans in Dutch oven.
Bring ribs and beans in Dutch oven to a boil.
REDUCE HEAT to simmer; cover and simmer 1 ½ hours until tender.
Serves 6.


BEEF SHORT RIBS

Cook beef ribs recipes with vegetables like onions and carrots.

  • 3 Tablespoons flour
  • 2 Tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 Teaspoon salt
  • ¼ Teaspoon black pepper
  • 3 Pounds beef short ribs
  • 2 to 4 Tablespoons shortening
  • ½ Cup chopped onions
  • ¼ Teaspoon whole allspice
  • 1 Bay leaf
  • ¾ Cup water
  • 8 Medium carrots (Scrape, wash and whole)
  • 8 Small onions (Peel and whole)
  • Prepared horseradish

Combine flour, sugar, salt and pepper; coat ribs (Reserve remaining flour).
Melt shortening in a large Dutch oven over medium heat; brown ribs on all sides.
Drain meat and place on platter; discard drippings from Dutch oven.
Stir remaining flour, onion, allspice, bay leaf and water in Dutch oven.
Return meat to Dutch oven; bring mixture to a simmer.
Cover Dutch oven and simmer for 1 hour and 45 minutes until meat is tender.
Add the carrots and onions; cover and simmer for 30 to 35 minutes.
Discard bay leaf and serve with horseradish; serves 4.


RED COOKED BEEF SHORT RIBS

Many beef short ribs recipes can be found using Kikkoman products.

  • 3 Pound beef short ribs
  • ½ Cup flour
  • 2 Tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1 ¾ Cups water (Divided)
  • ½ Cup Kikkoman Teriyaki Sauce
  • 1 Clove minced garlic
  • ½ Teaspoon ginger
  • 1/8 Teaspoon cloves

Coat ribs generously with flour; RESERVE ¼ cup of the excess flour.
Heat oil in large Dutch oven medium heat; brown ribs on all sides.
Drain off excess oil.
Combine and mix 1 ¼ CUPS of the water and next 4 ingredients.
Pour mixture over the ribs; cover and simmer 2 hours or until tender.
Blend RESERVED flour and ½ CUP water in small bowl until smooth.
Remove ribs to serving platter and keep warm.
FOR GRAVY measure pan drippings skimming off fat.
Add enough water to the drippings to make 2 ½ cups.
Return the drippings to the pan and bring to a boil.
Gradually stir in the flour water mixture; cook and stir until thickened.
Serve gravy with ribs; serves 4.


CHILI BARBEQUE BEEF SHORT RIBS

  • 4 Pounds beef short ribs
  • Salt/ pepper to taste
  • 2/3 Cup ketchup
  • ¼ Cup molasses
  • ¼ Cup lemon juice
  • 1 Tablespoon dry mustard
  • 1 Teaspoon chili powder
  • ¼ Teaspoon garlic powder

Season ribs with salt and pepper; place in large Dutch oven.
Cover ribs with water; bring to boil and REDUCE HEAT to simmer.
Cover and simmer for 2 hours or until tender; drain ribs.
Place ribs on rack of broiler pan.
Combine ketchup and next 5 ingredients in a small bowl.
Brush sauce over the ribs.
Broil ribs 4 to 5 inches from heat for 10 to 15 minutes.
NOTE: Turn ribs often during broiling basting with the sauce.
Serves 4.
